Why toughened

What toughened glass is

Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it several times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness. If it does break, it shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which is why it’s the safety glass used in human-impact areas. Glass for those areas must meet AS 1288, and toughened safety glass is classed under AS/NZS 2208. Your installer or builder can confirm the right glass and thickness for your job.

The catch: toughened glass can’t be cut, drilled or re-edged once it’s made. It has to be made to the right size first time, so measure carefully.

Options

Glass types and thicknesses

  • Clear — 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm.
  • Low iron (extra clear) — 6, 10 or 12 mm.
  • Matelux (satin frosted) — 6, 10 or 12 mm.
  • Grey tint — 6 or 12 mm.
  • Narrowreed (fluted) — 6 mm, or 10 mm in low iron.

Edges are arrissed (sanded safe) or flat polished. Panels run from 150 mm up to 3600 × 2400 mm.

Common questions

Can you cut toughened glass after it’s made?

No. Toughened glass can’t be cut, drilled or re-edged after toughening. It’s made to your sizes from the start.

Do you adjust my sizes?

No. We cut exactly to the sizes you enter. If there’s a problem with them, we’ll contact you before we cut.

Is standard (annealed) glass available?

Yes, for frames, cabinet inserts and table protectors — but it isn’t safety glass, so don’t use it in doors, showers or other human-impact areas.

Do prices include GST?

Yes. Every price on the site is in Australian dollars and includes GST, and your cart shows the GST amount.

Do you measure or install?

No. We supply glass only. You (or your installer) measure and fit it. Our measuring guide walks you through it.

Where do you deliver?
